Hajj is performed once a year in the Islamic month of zilhajj. Other than hajj period if one goes to Holy Kaaba and performs the essential rituals then this small pilgrimage at any time throughout the year will be called umrah. The point to be noted is that during the hajj, umrah is performed as a necessity ritual of hajj. But other than hajj, umrah is not a obligatory worship, though it is of huge reward.
ALLAH Almighty says in the Holy Quran, verse 2:196: And complete the Hajj and 'umrah for Allah . But if you are prevented, then [offer] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And do not shave your heads until the sacrificial animal has reached its place of slaughter. And whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of the head [making shaving necessary must offer] a ransom of fasting [three days] or charity or sacrifice. And when you are secure, then whoever performs 'umrah [during the Hajj months] followed by Hajj [offers] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And whoever cannot find [or afford such an animal] - then a fast of three days during Hajj and of seven when you have returned [home]. Those are ten complete [days]. This is for those whose family is not in the area of al-Masjid al-Haram. And fear ALLAH and know that ALLAH is severe in penalty. Virtues of Performing umrah: Prophet (PBUH) has described the huge merits of performing umrah. Umrah performed in the Holy month of Ramadan because is considered equal to hajj and it is commendable. Like hajj of baitullah, umrah also has particular rules which are to be followed those rules are discussed in the following lines as prescribed by the scholars. 1 umrah is a Sunnah (Sunnah is following prophet Mohammad (PBUH)): umrah is neither imperative (Farz) nor obligatory (wajib), but performing umrah once in a life is a Sunnah. Though, once or more than once, every time it is performed, it fetches huge rewards. 2- No Fixed Time: umrah can be performed anytime throughout the year, there is not any fixed month, day or time for performing umrah as the case with Hajj, as said earlier. 3- The station of Ihram (Meeqat): The station of Ihram (Meeqat) for umrah is Hill for the residents of the Haram of Makkah and the people of Hill. The area between the 5 appointed Meeqats of Hajj and the bounds of the Haram of Makkah is called Hill. The outsiders, who come to city Makkah for perfoming Hajj and umrah should already be in Ihram before entering into city Makkah.
